SOIL DEFICIENCIES

PROBLEM BEING SOLVED. The annual report of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research remarks that there has been much progress in the knowledge gained regarding the valuation in the mineral content of pastures, and the effect of these variations > upon stock health in a number of districts in the Dominion. A striking advance has been made particularly in regard to knowledge of the methods of controlling bush sickness on those areas of the North Island which have been afflicted with this stock ailment. Owing to the researches carried out, it is now possible to farm large areas afflicted by bush sickness without any fear of considerable losses through stock mortality. Of great impoi'tance in connection with the mineral content of pastures investigation has been the realisation among the farming community of the need for giving due attention to mineral deficiencies which occur seasonally, even in the best pastures, throughout the year. With the variations in the mineral content of these pastures generally known, steps are now being taken to maintain stock thriftiness during those seasons of the year when there occurs a low level of available mineral matter in the pastures.
