THE GOLF LINKS.

(To the Editor.) Sir,—l was more than interested in your account of the suggested golf links on the Awaki'no Road. I had the pleasure some short time ago of spending some hours in going over this proposed course, and while I have no desire to presume to be an authority on golf country, I fully concur in your opinion that this property has ideal topographical features for laying out an 18-hole course. I happen to know most of the championship courses in the Dominion, but nowhere have I seen more ideal country for the advent of the golfers of this or any other district. With a proper layout these grounds could not be surpassed at Balmacewan (Dunedin), Shirley (Christchurch), Heretaunga and Mirimar (Wellington), Hokowhiki (Palmerston North), Rotorua or Hamilton. My appeal is first to the lady golfers. Think of an 18-hole course, with all playing under ideal conditions. You golfers will all be helped, and down will come your handicaps, the ambition of all true golfers. I have no desire to speak of present conditions for golfers—they speak for themselves —but they are not helping the game in the town or district. Some men think that the game is for them alone, but this is entirely wrong—we cannot do without the ladies. It has been said that the distance of .7% miles from town is a big handicap for these links, but one cannot have all good things at their back door. The New Zealand Championships are being played to-day at Heretaunga, 18 miles from Wellington. You have had golf in Te Kuiti for 20 years, but how far have you gone? Nowhere. Te Kuiti, situated as it is in the heart of the King Country, should be the Mecca of thousands of golfers, and the chance is now with the people of Te Kuiti which may 'not come again. —Yours, etc., F. W. B.
