LONDON DINNER COMEDY.
FAMOUS GUEST'S PORT. This is the story of a comedy of errors which occurred at a West End (London) dinner recently. It was an excellent dinner. Cocktails were served. The appropriate wines accompanied the courses, and everything went happily until a distinguished guest—one of the great ones of the diplomatic world—stood up to speak. Instead of the witty pleasantries which the occasion demanded, the speaker said everything he should not have said. Other speakers followed in the same indiscreet vein. The majority of the diners gasped and shook their heads sadly. Then the head waiter realised what had happened. A number of specially large glasses had been filled with a rare old port of great value and extreme potency instead of with burgundy! Waiters whisked the glasses away. But it was too late—most of them were empty! It is perhaps all
to the good that the victims' memories of that evening are not too vivid.
