WAIMIHA

(Own Correspondent.) At the last week-end the Waimiha cricket team again journeyed to Ongarue, there to play the Ongarue Club a return match. The result of the meeting between these teams having been decidedly a fine effort by both and a win for Waimiha," the Ongarue team anxiously awaited an opportunity of reversing the position, which they did in a very indisputable manner. Waimiha opened disastrously, losing three valuable wickets for only seven runs. Lamb, for Waimiha, collected another nine runs before Fanning made good use of a chance and bowled him out. The Waimiha captain, J. Collins, opened very carefully and with Middleton batting confidently, the pair added a useful 17 before being separated, Collins falling to the tricky bowling of Delany. Middleton batted well but could not keep his partners long and a very patchy innings closed for 40 runs. The Ongarue bowlers—Delany and Stamp —used the ball in a style which baffled the best of the Waimiha batsmen. Ongarue also opened very badly indeed, losing the first four wickets for 12, L. Blake and Stamp being dismissed very cheaply. Delany came to the rescue with fine play and gained a nicely hit 15, R. Hibble and McLeod ably assisting him to the total for first innings to 50. Waimiha taking the second innings seemed to have lost the vim and enthusiasm which characterised their first match with Ongarue, and no improvement was evident in their second attempt on this occasion to what had appeared in the first innings. Not one of the batsmen reached double figures, Adkins with 9 coming nearest. Total for second innings 45 runs, leaving Ongarue to get 36 to win. There was a marked difference in the opening by the Ongarue for their second innings in comparison with the first. There was a deter"mined look on the features of Blake and Fanning with the wicket, land they compiled a very nice 25. I The Waimiha total was passed for the loss of three wickets, Bray compiling 18 in splendid style. McLeod played great cricket, and without doubt was the outstanding player of the day, adding to Ongarue's score 25 runs, this being the highest score, and the innings closed with Ongarue leading with a very good margin after a very interesting game. Delany and Stamp were the outstanding bowlers for Ongarue, they not at any time allowing the batsmen to take any risks, and the team's fielding was noticeably good, McLeod being very much in the picture with some smart work. Lamb, for Waimiha, without question took the bowling honours, he doing the "hat trick" in the second innings. Some very prominent work was done by Edkins with his two smart catches in the long field, one catch being a brilliant one-handed one on the boundary. There was noticeable a very fine spirit prevailing on all sides, and it can be expected that the future will hold forth many contests between teams, in all kinds of games, from these two townships.
