OLD BOYS A CHAMPIONS. PIO PIO IN SECOND PLACE. The last of the series of Hamill Shield matches for the season resulted in Old Boys A maintaining its lead of one point over Pio Pio in the championship ladder, both teams securing two-point victories on Saturday. The former defeated Railway by 112 runs and the later defeated Old Boys B by 33 runs. In the match Old Boys A v. Railway, Old Boys A batted first, but made a disastrous start, Bowick being clean bowled by Farrell before scoring. Lusk, the other opening batsman, soon followed, being caught by Howell off the same bowler, two wickets being down for 13 runs. The partnership of Walsh and Evans, however, put a different complexion on the game. By steading batting the score mounted until the century was passed, when Walsh (35) was caught in attempting a big hit. The outgoing batsman had played correct cricket, making his runs with well-timed strokes all round the wickets. Evans continued to bat enterprisingly until he had made 67 runs. His score included nine fours and two sixes. East, who has showed improved form in every match, joined Dinsdale when five wickets were down for 110 runs, and the colts carried the score to 212 before the Old Boys' captain decided to declare. Both the not out boys are lads who still have all their cricket before them, and the experience gained by them in this season's competition should stand them in good stead in the future, as both have a fine repertoire of scoring strokes. Railway were set a fairly stiff proposition to pass Old Boys' tally, and started cautiously. When eight runs had been scored, Wright, who opened with Farrell, was bowled by Evans, having scored five. G. Martin retired shortly after he had taken centre, McNaught taking his place at the crease. The latter made seven before he was caught by Evans off Lusk, who was bowling well. Farrell (11) was the next to go, four wickets being down for 30. Blake scored 18, and then Davidson, playing cricket which delighted the spectators, knocked up 40 in good time, before Lusk sent him back to the "pavilion." The last two men made t a "duck" each, and the innings closed for 101.

Lusk, who took four wickets for 18, kept a perfect length throughout, and varying his pace, always had the re spect of the batsmen. Following are the details:—

OLD BOYS B v. PIO PIO. Old Boys B batted first in their match with Pio Pio, scoring 110 runs before the last wicket fell. McLeod, who earlier in the season made a century, top-scored with 67. Playing both bowlers with confidence, despite the fact that he gave a couple of possible chances he batted well. He played the straight balls correctly, but he never hesitated to lay the wood on any off the wickets. Boulton was the only other man to make double figures, scoring 14. Arneil and Ronaldson bowled throughout the innings for Pio Pio, the former taking seven wickets for 36, and the latter two for 49. Maata and Ronaldson opened for Pio Pio. Maata went early, but Ronaldson went on to score 53 before he was dismissed. Stone (34) and Vine (25) were associated in a profitable partnership and Neeley, who made 13 not out, shaped promisingly. Jim Faulke, the erstwhile Railway player, made his re-appearance, but failed to get going with the bat. He was as keen as ever in the field, and saved his side many runs. Six Old Boys' bowlers were -tried, Olney, who took two wickets for 45, bowled well, but was inclined to sacrifice length for pace. He has a good action, and if he were to concentrate more on length, would most likely to get more wickets. Boulton four for 39, and Colclough three for 31 were the only other Old Boys' bowlers to secure wickets. Following are the details: —

In the Reid Shield match, Oddfellows defeated Druids, who went through last year without a loss, by an innings and 27 runs. So far this season Druids have not -won a shield competition match. Batting first; Druids made only 35 runs, Oddfellows replying with 102 runs for six wickets, when the innings was declared closed. In their second turn at the crease the Druids compiled 40 runs. Bowling for Oddfellows in the first innings, Churcher took seven wickets for 14 runs and Olney three for 14. Churcher again bowled well in the second innings, securing six wickets for 23. McLeod took two wickets for 9, and Olney one for 5. x Farrell (37) top-scored for the Oddfellows. He was dropped early in the outfield by Condon, and showed his appreciation by hitting three boundaries off the same over. He was eventually well caught by Weo, who made a running catch in the 'country.' T. Hetet (22 not out) became affected by cramp and was compelled to get a substitute to run for him, but despite his handicap batted attractively, scoring the majority of his runs by well-judged pull strokes. Howell, who came on late in the innings, was the most successful Druids' trundler, taking two wickets for 8 runs.

Rangi Roberts (13) made top score in the first innnigs, while Rata, who made 12, was the only Druid to reach double figures in the second innings.
