ATTEMPT TO STEAL CARS

AND BREAK INTO STORE. WAITOMO PREMISES INVADED. In the early hours of Monday morning three attempts were made to steal motor cars at Waitomo, and an effort to break into Mr. Tarrant's store, but in each case the would-be thief was foiled. Mr. H. Bentey's motor garage appeared to claim the first attention of the thief. Mr. Bentley's garage is on a rise, and the thief pushed the car out and ran it down the incline. The car being locked, however, he could not get it started, and it was left on the side of the road. Another attempt was made on Mr. J. Holden's car earaged close by, but this also failed. The marauder then turned his attention to a car owned by a camping party. The doors of this car being locked, a glass window was smashed, but the gears being also locked, the thief met with another disappointment, though he transferred two gallons of petrol from this car and placed it in Mr. Bentley's car It was also discovered that an attempt had been made to enter Mr. Tarrant's store. A hole had been bored in the walls of the building, but evidently the would-be burglar had been disturbed as he did not succeed in making an entry. No damage was done to the cars belonging to Messrs. Bentley and Holden, though the one owned by the camping party had the door window smashed.

The police have the matter in hand, and were making inquiries in the district yesterday.
