ART UNION WINNER

TAKES LUCK QUIETLY. BOUGHT ONE TICKET. The news that he was the winner of the £2OOO prize in the Lucky Strike Art Union was conveyed to Mr. Maurice O'Brien by a newspaper reporter at 5 o'clock on Saturafternoon. , Mr. O'Brien was asleep at the time as he had been working at a very early hour in the morning and had not long been home. When seen by a "Dominion" representative Mr. O'Brien did not appear ot be unduly elated at his success, and viewed his success with quiet philosophy. A man in his early 30's, Mr. O'Brien is married with three young children. He has held various positions within the past twelve months, and has also received employment under the No. 5 scheme. Some three months ago he was engaged by a Mr. William Power, a cartage contractor,/ a position he still holds. Although Mr. O'Brien had hopes of being able to commence a similar business on his own account, an injury received by his employer has meant that Mr. O'Brien is practically in charge of Mr. Power's interests, and it is not likely that Mr. O'Brien will launch out on his own in the meantime. Part of the prize will go toward the purchase of his home. It has been the practice of Mr. and Mrs. O'Brien to purchase one ticket each in the art unions that have been held in recent months. Although they have frequently had to deny themselves some small purchase in order to have the necessary money for the tickets, they now have no cause to regret their decision. The ticket which won the first prize was purchased from a Palmerston North tobacconist.

Mr. O'Brien is well known in Palmerston North sporting circles, being a former football player and boxer, and in recent years he has acted as referee in amateur boxing matches.
