HARIILL SHIELD MATCHES. In continuation of the Hamill Shield contest last Saturday, Pio Pio played Old Boys A. at Pio Pio, and Old Boys B. played Railway on the Domain. The weather was excellent. In the latter match Railway secured a two-point victory over Old Boys B. Old Boys B. went in first. Liddell (38) and Bolton (42) were responsible for the bulk of Old Boys' runs. Both batted brightly, Liddell being in his best form. Bolton made his highest score of the season, hitting everything hard and often. Included in his score were two 6's and five 4's. McLeod and Hallett were the only other batsmen to reach double figures, but the score at the end of the innings was 138, a very useful total.

Railway, however, had something up their sleeves. They startly badly, two wickets falling for only 4 runs, but after that some big scores were raised. Wright gathered 28, gaining the greater part of them with comparatively cautious play. Banfield, however, opened up his shoulders and hit the bowling all over the field. Of his total of 65, there were eleven 4's and two 6's, accounting for 56 of his total. Gilbert also did great work, eclipsing Banfield's score by 8. He also used the boundary to a great extent, gaining seven 6's. These scores, aided by two 17's by Barlow and Rata respectively, brought Railway's score to the total of 213* an extremely large score, which beat Old Boys' score of 138 by a substantial margin. OLD BOYS A v. PIO PIO.

In the match of Old Boys A and Pio Pio, Old Boys gained a two-point victory! over Pio Pio. Old Boys batted first and gained 117 runs. The Old Boys' skipper, Martin, showed a return to his old form in compiling 33. Things were not looking too promising for the town team when "Dutchy" went to the wicket, but he was comfortable from the start, and scored freely off the loose balls, but took no risks with the straight ones. Voyce, who made the next highest score, ably seconded his skipper. Bowling for Pio Pio, Arneil, Rodger, and Ronaldson gained about equal honours. The Pio Pio batsmen could no nothing right with Evans' and Lusk's bowling, only two of them reaching double figures—Ronaldson and Snell. The innings closed with Pio Pio's score at 51. NOTES BY "MID-OIM."

An interesting stage in the Hamill Shield competition was reached when Te Kuiti Old Boys A team went to the wickets on Saturday to face the bowling of Arneil and Ronaldson— Pio Pio then leading for championship honours by one point. Bowick after making ten in two strokes was caught at point. The next four batsmen, Lusk, Evans, Hine and Walsh, each in turn fell victims without reaching double figures. A partnership stand by Martin and Dinsdale, however, steadied play. East played a careful not out, while Voyce, the last man, did some hitting, bringing the score up to 117. Maata and Hickey who opened for Pio Pio, did not face the bowling

with their usual confidence, both falling early to Evans, who maintained a fine length throughout. Lusk also early proved his form with the ball. This, combined with alertness in the field, was the means of dismissing Pio Pio for a small score. Ronaldson (14) and Snell (11) were the only two to reach double figures. Hine did great service behind the wickets, only three balls passing him. On .the local Domain Railway, last year's champions, had a day out and treated the spectators to some sparkling cricket, their first innings score of 213 being a record on the Domain. Gilbert, who has been off the scene» for some time, scored 73, only nine of which were singles. Banfield showed some of his old form, assisting Gilbert to entertain those on the bank by magnificent boundaries. In a score of 65 he only played three singles. Wright also played a good innings for 28. Rata and Barton each contributed 17. Wright and Banfield added 80 runs for the »third wicket.

Liddell contributed 38 to Old Boys' tally by nice stroke all round the wicket. Bolton hit out freely for 42. Hansen had the 1 misfortune to mistake the proper crease, which caused him to play too far back, striking the top of his wicket. . Teams should see that the wicket is the correct length. Last Saturday the wicket was fully 2ft over length. This was responsible for the poor quality of the bowling and also for Hansen's early dismissal. The fielding of the- Old Boys, with the exception of a brilliant catch on the boundary by Liddell, was' deplorable. Hetet, behind the wickets for Railway, was not the Hetet of former days.

TEAM FOR ROTORUA. The following will represent Maniapoto v. Rotorua, at Rotorua: H. E. Martin, G. Lusk, J. M. Hine, J. Evans (Old Boys A), F. W. Liddell, H. McLeod (Old Boys B), R. Arheil, M.
