BRIAND REPORTED DEAD

(Aristide Briand, ex-Premier of France, was 70 years of age. He held the Premiership from 1909-11, and again for 56 days in 1913. He was also Premier from 1915 to 1917, but resigned, almost immediately. He played a prominent part in the re-ligio-political struggle years ago in France. Entering the Chamber of Deputies in 1902, his rise was rapid. In 1925-26 he resigned the Premiership twice, when he formed his tenth Ministry, but was subsequently defeated. About 18 months ago he became Minister of Foreign Affairs, but resigned at the latter end of last year owing to ill-health. M. Briand was a strong advocate of any movement to ensure world p,eace, and one of the most prominent figures in the League of Nations. When he retired from politics he said he was a disappointed man owing to his efforts to bring about a better international feeling in Europe proving futile.)
