TRAGEDY IN BACKBLOCKS. CHARRED BODY FOUND. (Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 11.45 a.m.) Brisbane, this day. Evidence of a dreadful tragedy in the north-west is being investigated by the Conclurry police. The charred remains of a man, some in a bag and some in a fire, with part of the backbone chopped in halves, was found at Wallacatoobie. THE METROPOLITAN STAKES. OUTSIDER’S CLOSE WIN. (Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 10.40 a.m.) Sydney, this day. The Morning Herald says that purchased by its present owner for 20 guineas, the aged gelding Strength achieved fame by winning the Metropolitan Stakes by a head from Concentrate after a gruelling struggle for more than a furlong, in which six horses participated. Strength’s victory was one of the most unexpected in the history of the race. He lasted just long enough to win from Concentrate, which with a somewhat belated run, was gaining rapidly, Chide apparently made his run too soon, for he could make no impression bn the leaders in the straight, while Veilmond did not do his best until the race was over.
