At a conference of medicos at Bir« ningham recently the subject of tobacco cropped up. The president said that if some method could be devised of eliminating nicotine from tobacco, the discovery would benefit humanity because nicotine was responsible for many and grave ills. Surely the doctors taking part in that confeernce are behind the times—otherwise they would know that tobacco is now being grown and manufactured in New Zealand which is practically free from nicotine. This happy result has been achieevd by toasting the leaf. That kills the nicotine. Tobacco thus treated is rendered quite harmless. You can smoke it even to excess with impunity. You cannot say that of the imported tobaccos, for they are mostly full of nicotine. There are, by the way, only four brands of toasted New Zealand on the market— Riverhead Gold, Navy Cut No. 3, Cavendish and Cut Plug No. 10. They are of various strengths, but are all remarkable for their purity, coolness, flavour and fine aroma. Of course they are being imitated—so beware! (166)
