THEFT AT OTOROHANGA
GOLD WATCH AND CASH. STOLEN FROM NURSING HOME. An audacious theft was committed at Otorohanga yesterday morning, when the nursing home conducted by Nurse Gorrie was entered by a tramp, and a gold wristlet watch and a sum of money were stolen. As a result of Nurse Gorrie’s prompt action on discovering the theft, the culprit, a man aged about 22 years, is now in custody. During the morning the nurse, accompanied by a young woman employed at the home, had occasion to go into the township on business, and on returning found the back door open and evidences of an intruder. The youngwoman immediately missed her gold watch and a sum of money which had been left in her bedroom. Nurse Gorrie at once rang up the police and also informed a neighbour of the theft, instructing him to keep a lookout for any stranger passing along the main road. The outcome of this was that a young man was arrested with the stolen property in his possession. It is thought that the man must have been hiding in a workshop near the house, and had waited his opportunity when the women left the house.
