An explosion of 6001 b. of powder occurred in a coal mine near Linton, Indiana. More than 29 miners were killed.
The city of Chicago, which was saved from serious financial difficulties in February, 1930, by Mr. Silas Strawn’s Citizens’ Rescue Committee, which provided a fund of about £15,000,000 to enable the municipality to pay its bills, once more is heavily in debt.
The Secretary of the U.S. Treasury, Mr. A. W. Mellon, in a statement to the Finance Committee of the Senate, said he estimated that the deficit at the end of the present fiscal year would be £77,000,000. The decrease in .the revenue for the year would aggregate about £160,000,000.

The German Golf Association decided by 23 votes to 15 to abolish the stymie for the year, including all championships.
Disorderly scenes characterised the meeting of the N.S.W. Labour Council when the ballot for officers was held. Feeling ran high and finally blows were exchanged between the secretary, Mr. J. Garden, and a prominent Communist named Ryan. During the scuffle another Communist named Griffin was felled. Although others received nasty bruises nobody was seriously injured.
The United States Government has apologised to the Prime Minister of Italy, Signor Mussolini, for a recent speech by Major-General Smedley Butler of the Marine Corps. The Secretary of the Navy, Mr. C. F. Adams, has ordered\ a general courtmartial for Major-General Butler.
Drastic action was taken by the striking shearers in the Surat district, Queensland. At three sheds the employees were threatened by a crowd of angry strikers that they would be shot if they did not pack up their swags.
In the year 1928-29, according to the Home Secretary, 13 persons over the age of 12 months and 39 infants under one year old were murdered in England, in respect of whom nobody was arrested. Most of the infants were newly-born and their bodies were discovered in circumstances which gave no tangible clue.
More than 300 rebels were killed, 130 were wounded and 1250 were captured in the recent trouble in Burma, according to a statement by Sir James Crerar, Home member in the Legislative Assembly.

The Prime Minister, Mr. MacDonald, announced in the House of Commons that the Government was prepared to authorise British entries for the Schneider Cup contest if the cost were privately defrayed.
In the House of Lords Lord inson (formerly Sir Willoughby Dickinson), one of the originators of the League of Nations, opened a debate on international disarmament. He referred to the conference which the Council of the League has 'decided shall meet in February, 1932.
