Palmerston North aspires to the position of seventh city in the Dominion, of which there are at present six.—Ahickland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, Nelson and Wanganui. The last-named town attained the dignity four years ago by passing the 200,000 population mark. Nelson, which has a. population of considerably less than 20,000, was constituted a city by Royal Commission in the early days of the settlement, shortly after the creation of the Aiigjlican bishopric. Other towns which are approaching a population of 20,000 are Napier and Invercargill.
