A BOISTEROUS NIGHT.

CYCLONE STRIKES TOWN.

DAMAGE TO PROPERTY AND

TREES

A particularly boisterous night was experienced on Thursday, when heavy rain fell accompanied by a terrific wind, between 9 and 10 o'clock, which resulted in some damage locally. The town received a visitation from a miniature cyclone. A particularly severe gust of wind in the nature of a narrow strip seems to have come from a north-easterly direction and swept in a line over .the town between Mangarino Road and tho railway station. Damage was done to trees along the Mangarino Road, where a fowl house in the path of the gale was blown to pieces. In this vicinity a complete track of damaged trees and shrubs marks the passage of the cyclone. Two large trees in the vicinity of the railway station in Rora Street were blown down, while tho veranda tops of several business premises were partly torn away, several fences also suffering from .the blast. As a result of the storm power was off over a portion of the town for about an hour. Power was off on a portion of the Mangarino Road also as the result of damagje to wires from a falling willow tree. Part of the latter damage was repaired yesterday and was completed to-day.
