ROAD METALLING CONTRACTS.

(To the Editor.)

Sir. Road metalling contracts are now. being carried on by the "Waitomo County Council. Has the Council adopted a, new method of road-mak-ing? These road's are being made with a very flat surface, no . camber being given to the surface of the metal to carry off rain-water, consequently the surface of the roads after rain will be a series of little pools of water destroying the strength and life of them. Apparently in tho formation of the roads before tlie metal is laid down, plenty of camber is given to them, sin. protecting boards are fixed on each side of the road to hold the metal in position for a similar depth. The metal is then spread in between these boards, but practically to a level surface; thus giving a depth ol five inches from each side of the road, but diminishing from each side to the centre to about three inches. This diminishing depth of metal or strength of the road is thus reduced in accordance with such camber as is on the formation underneath. What ai’e the specifications in connection with these contracts? —I am. etc., ' INTERESTED.
