THE RAILWAY LOCO DEPARTMENT
SOME CHANGES PENDING. It is reported that alterations are to be “Gazetted” shortly, subject to the approval of the Governor-General, bringing into effect some alterations in the working conditions of the locomotive branch of the New Zealand Railways, and also giving an increase in wages to first-grade drivers, etc. It. was learned that these regulations and increases were about to be granted at the time of the railway dispute a year or so ago, but were held up partly on that account and owing to the then pending arrival of the Railway Commission. The matter lias been under consideration several times since then, and the Railway Board lias now come to a decision, in the various matters, and these will, subject to the approval of the Gover-nor-General. be brought into operation bv notice in the “Gazette' at an early date. One impoutant step taken is that which reduces the period in which employees may reach the maximum, and this period has been reduced by about three years.
