AMERICAN IMMIGRATION LAW.

DEPORTING MOTHER AND BABY. From the Daily Chronicle Special Correspondent, Martin H. Donohue. Paris, October 9. Profound irritation has been caused in France by the high-handed methods of the New York immigration agnthorities in deporting a French mother and her six-weeks-old baby. Mine. Athimon and her husband have been domiciled in tlie United States for some years. Th ree months ago the woman returned to her native land, on a visit to her relatives. A baby was born during her stay in France. Recently the mother and child started fur America. Although travelling first-class, Mine. Athimon was held up by the immigration autliorites- dn reaching New York. They made a first-class fuss about the baby. The “quota was full,” and the baby “could not be admitted.” The mother was 'told she might land; Li.it she must be separated from her child. She indignantly refused, with the result tha.it she and baby were dumped down on Ellis Island—the asylum of undesirables and doubtfuls. Pieadings and protests were in vain, and finally the mother and child were deported and sent back to France. As might be expected, inadame is somewhat stunned by her experience in the “Land of Liberty.” in clinging to her child, she finds herself separated from her hlisband. He is in America : she lias been compelled to return to France for tlie heinous offence of being a mother. It is possible that representations will be made to Washington by the French Government, for while the decision of the immigration authorities may be legally right, it is regarded as being none the less morally wrong.
