King Country Chronicle Tuesday, December 2, 1924. A BRIGHT OUTLOOK.

There may be some optimistic people who think that because of the phenomenal pi’ices for wool, there is going to be a wave of prosperity over the country; that there is now no farmer in financial troubles; and the country is now over all its difficulties. To a certain extent this is true, but even now there will not be many sheep farmers who are yet clear of their heavy liabilities incurred during the slump of two years ago. Any profits that may be made by them will have to go towards reducing their overdraft or arrears of interest. There will be very little left for the farmer himself, but the good prices are going to give him a clear start, and he can now work with the thought that he is gradually but surely emerging from the slough of despond that left nothing but a dreary outlook for the future. The farmer can now face the position with a hope of the old clays of prosperity and contentment. Given another good season, and there is every prospect of it, the farming industry will be on a better basis than it has been for many years. Whereas the bulk of the public expenditure has been in the large towns, the pendulum will now swing toward the country, and financial institutions and capitalists will realise that there is still money to be earned in broad acres. In the meantime the farmer has a considerable amount of leeway to make up, and that cannot be done in one, or even two good seasons. Given a third, there will be very few who will not be in a position to face the future with hope and optimism. Already there is an increased demand for sheep and dairying country, and people are talking of taking up land again. Every penny rise in wool means a million pounds to the country, and when the money for the wool is in circulation it will make a distinct change for the better in the conditions of country life.
