TE KUITI BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ELECTRICAL REPORT.

Mr J. W. Muir, borough electrical engineer, reported as under:—During the month we overhauled lines on Ward and Queen streets. This will help to minimise trouble in bad weather. We still have considerable amount of line to tighten up, but it is nearer the station, and in the event of bad weather could be Watched for faults. Re Wiring Contracting. The demand for installations is considerable. I have definite advice to go on with twelve installations and have finished one. I have arranged for the necessary material and labour which should be on band early this week to enable me to complete the work at the rate of two or three installations per week. FOREMAN'S REPORT. The monthly report of the borough foreman, Mr T. Dix, is as follows : Maintenance. —A large portion oi the Awakino road at the junction of the railway line and Carroll street hss been patched with limestone metal and blinded with river sningle, to improve this piece of road, which used to get in a very bad state in wet weather. " The whole of the water tables are being thoroughly cleaned out, which total a distance of approximately 20 miles. This work is very important, as once the water starts running down the centre, the roads soon go to pieces. The following have been done to date: Mangaorino road. Rata, Tawa, Jennings, Alexandra and Hinerangi streets, and Taupiri street, and the Awakino road about half-way down. A large amount of patching hss been done on the Mangaorino road with river shingle, also the top end of Tawa street which has been given a coat of river shingle three inch thick", a distance of 12 chains, on account of this piece of road being! dangerous to travel over- The footpaths throughout the borough are very hard to keep clean, the width 12ft, does not get enough traffic to keep the weeds down, ocnseguently it is an expensive item to keep them as they should be kept. The clean' ing of the streets is also being attended to. ,Two men were engaged ring-barking the willows in the river that did not die last year, a considerable number of which were blocking the stream. These were taken out, and to river is perfectly clear from the bowling green to the river deviation. The remainder will be taken out next year. William street haß been metalled with river shingle of a very good quality a distance of 10 chainß, thu3 connecting to the metal leading to the Ahuroa road. This was a very bad piece of road in winter and should prove a very good asset, as settlers, will be able to get ta town in any weather. Tammadge street has been metalled with river shingle of a very good quality a distance of 25 chains, 42ft wide Bin deep. George street has been metalled from Ngatai street to the junction of Hikaka, street, a distance of eight chains, with limestone metal blinded well with screenings and river shingle, 12ft wide and Sin deep. The amount spent to date is £6O, thus leaving £64 to complete the remaining eight chains. Hetet street has been metalled with river shingle of a very good quality, a distance of 21 chains, 10ft wide and Bin deep, the water tables were also thoroughly cleaned out, tbe amount allocated for thisstreet was £IOO, amount sent £IOO 16s.

Tonga street has been metalled; with limestone metal blinded well with screenings and river shingle. This was a very necessary piece of road as it connects up Seddor* street with the Awakino road.

All the shingle blinding for these' streets ia being carted by the borough team, otherwise it would be impossible to do the work withiD the estimates, as labour, tools, material, and carting have all gone up since these estimates were supplied to the council.

Cr Webber said Mr Dix deserved*congratulation for keeping the works within the estimates considering the fact that labour and material had increased in cost. The report was adopted.
