ELECTRIC POWER.
LOCAL SOURCE OP SUPPLY.
DEPARTMENT UNSYMPATHETIC.
The following letter was received at last night's meeting of the Borough Council from Mr L. Birks, Chief Electrical Engineer of the Public Works Department:—"l have to acknowledge receipt of your letter asking that we should send an expert to report on a water power proposition on tbe Waips river, near Te Kuiti. I regret that I have eo one available who could be sent to do this work. It is, moreover, a question on which there are several consulting engineers who are quite competent to advise you. tf you can secure tbe necessary data from one of these, I shall be very pleased to consult with tbe engineer you employ and to advise generally on the development of any scheme proposed." The Mayor: That's awkward. They have always done it before. It would cost us £4O or £SO to obtain a report. Cr Blackman: The Department wants us to spend our money in employing a consulting engineer, and then turn it down.
Tbe Mayor moved that it be pointed out to Mr Birks that the proposed work was in tbe general interest and was considered to be very necessary by tbe eooncil, and tbat tbe eooncil a»k for a reconsideration of the decision. Cr J. P. Walsh seconded the motion, which was carried.
