TERRIBLE IN SEVERITY

BELGIANS REPULSE GERMANS

London, Saturday

Reporting on the bombardment of Antwerp, Mr Martin Donohue, the war correspondent of the Daily Chronicle, states that wounded are pou;ing into Ostend. The Belgian medical arrangements appear to have broken down. Many victims have been without food and water for long hours. At Ostend food is lacking. Some of the wounded state that the German shell fire in a particular section of the fortfied enceinte at \nt werp was terribly severe, one Bection having reduced two fort 3to powder. The enemy flung heavy assaulting columns againßt the breach, but the entrenched Belgians met them with terrific machine gun fire. Two columns wavered, and, defying a liberal display of personal violence by their officers, broke, and fled in disorder, by which their losses were accentuated fourfold. After regaining the shelter of their artillery tbev fired on the trenches.

Antwerp, Mr Donobue then reported; was Btill holding .out bravely. The Germans were in force round Lofcern, Zele, and Dierdeich, to the east of the city. Fugitives at Amsterdam state that the Germans held nine forts near Lierre, south of Antwerp. On Fri day shells fell on the prison. The yparders liberated the prisoners. Messages received from Rosendael, in North-eaat of France, on Friday even ing, stated that the situation at Antwerp Was then at its m)st critical etage.
