TO SAVE THE CITY.
Ostend, Saturday.
It transpires that the Burgomaster of Antwerp issued a proclamation a week ago quoting the Kaiser's assurances of non-interference with the civil population. He warned the citizens against interference with foreign soldiera entering th 9 town. The city, therefore regarded surrender as the natural sequence and the only sane policy for saving the city.
During the bombardment the destruction of the waterworks by the Germans deprived the city of water, and prevented the fire brigade from extinguishing fireß.
All the chief nrt treasures were removed. The suburbs of Borgehour, Zurimburg, and Berchem have been almost entirely burnt out. It ia rumoured that the Queen of Belgium has sailed for England.
