KNEW WHAT IT WOULD BE.
Two old Scotch farmers—cronies since their schoolboy days—were accustomed to visit alternately each other's homes, in order to chat over old times and incidentally emptj pipes and sample the barley bree. On one occasion, when the bottle had been emptied, the host, ow'ing to a certain anniversary, placed a second bottle on the table. His visitor, rising as it to take leave, held out his hand, saying : "Guid nicht, Davey !" Davey (pushing his friend back ijitc the chair) : "Na, na, Sammie ; ye'U no' gang till we hae a taste o' this yin." Sammie (resuming his seat) : "Och, I ken that ; but, man, I wanted taf shake hands wi' ye while I cud se< ve 1313.
