FAMINE IN JAPAN.

The famine in the Aomori and Hokkaido provinces, in the north of Japan, is the worst that has been experienced since the terrible distress of 1869. The crops will not average a thousandth part of the normal yield. ' The run on the local banks continues. Many thousands of people are starv- ' ing and parents are selling their daughters. Many batches of the girls ' are arriving daily at Tokio, fur the : Yoshnvara, or for sending abroad. fc The Government has granted 6,000.3 000 yen—about £600,000 towards ' supplying relief in the afflicted dis- ' tricts.
