WAITOMO COUNTY COUNCIL.

ENGINEER'S REPORT. I beg to report upon the works under the charge of the Council since last meeting as follows: —O-ving to the unsettled state of the weather, comparatively very little metalling was done during the month. Messrs Tarry and Co. completed about o0 chains of metalling on the Waitomo Valley road, and also supplied and delivered 400 cubic yards approximately of river shingle for blinding the limestone metal on the Te Kuiti-To Kumi road.—On the Ngapaenga ro.sd Mr Rci'hery made another start with his metalling contract and roughly laid two or three chains.—Mr Innes completed during the month a distance ot about SO chains on the Pukearuhe road and 10 chains on the Arapna road. This contractor has had hir crusher overhauled and is now turning out much better metal. —On the Kohua road Mr Smyth has now only n few chains left to complete his earthwork contract.—Mr Edgar' is now completing the stone culverts on the Mangaotaki road which, awing to the difficulty of getting timber, were hungup for some weeks. Several men are alao employed effecting necessary repairs to the upper portion oi the road. —Tenders were received during the month for widening about 28 chains on this road near the Mangaotaki bridge and the lowest tender, that of Mr Smyth, for £143 15s Bd, was accepted.—On the Hutiwai road, tenders were received for widening 105£ chains of fori-ation, and a contract was subsequently let to Mr A. Hogg, the lowest tenderer, at £lB5 18s. —On the south end of the Hanga-tiki-Otorohanga road a distance of 451 chains was formed during the month 14 ft wide. An engineering survey was also made and plans prepared for forming another 52 chains on this road. Tenders for the work were invited, and that of A. Hogg for £7l 14s 6d was accepted.—l also invited tenders for the erection, labour only, of the bridge over the Mangapu stream, on this road, and that of Mr Board, for £76, was accepted. —On the Otorohanga-Pirongia road, tenders were received for metalling a distance of 19 chains, and that of Mr Glennie at £99 5s 4d was subsequently accepted. On the Kawa road, Messrs Scott and Forsyth have now most of the material for the erection of the bridge over the Waipa river at the site. They are unable, however, to commence the erection of the structure on account of the strike the piles are not yet to hand. —Since last meeting I inspected in company with Cr Smyth the roads in the Targitu. settlement. Most of them are in a very bad state, even for horse traffic. I have arranged, however, to effect [necessary repairs to the various roads as far as funds will allow.—E. R. Gould, County Enginee.r
