The cancellation of the reserve liability of shareholders in joint Btock banks is contrary to the best interests of banking. This was the opinion expressed by Mr Gosken, one of the directors of the Bank of England, in an address to the Institute of Bank*. He attributed the present money demand to the restlessness abroad. The money market's digestion, he held, had been upset. The market was suffering from nerves and needed a rest cure. Lord Curzon, delivering the Rede lecture at the Cambridge University upon modern Parliamentary elo-j quence. stated that oratory had moHt disappeared from the Uoiij Commons.
