King Country Chronicle Wednesday, July 16th, 1913 THE FARMING OUTLOOK.
The inaugural address ol the president of the Now Zealand Farmerß' Union at the' congress now being held at Wellington strike a high optimisic note in repect to the prospect of the farming industry generally. Such an attitude is clearly justifiable in view of the rapicl development nf the various branches of farming in tho Dominion, and of the highly favourable markets which have recently prevailed in respect to farm produets ot every description. Considering that New Zealand is essentially a farming country, and that tho future of the Dominion rests largely upon the manner in which tho farming interests are conserved, and the unutilised country developed it, is to ho hoped the efforts of the legislators will be devoted to developing to the greatest possiblo extent the resources oi: the Dominion in this direction. It is common knowledge that the developI ment and prosperity of tho rural dis- | tricta has been chiefly promoted ! through the medium of dairying and | in our own district the rapid spread of thi3 industry is a signticant sign of the times. The time will not bo long before the King Country will be comparing favourably with much older established districts in dairying, and it behoves our settlers t<> promote their I own interests by supposing the utI most the various co-operative concernß ; which are becoming established in the district. The importance of good roada in resnect to the dairying industry is universally recognised, and the fact that t.ie progress of tho industry is inseparably associated with tho progress of tho district, reading should he steadily borne in mind. It is to be hoped no effort will be spared to continue an active metalling policy both on tho part of the local authorities and the Government, and by urging this on every possible occasion the progress of the farming community will be materially assisted.
