MIROAHUIAO-MATIERE ROAD.

GRANT FOR METALLING. When the Prime Minister was at Aria some time ago, an application was made to him for a grant for the road between Pio Pio and Aria, and Mr Massey promised to accede to the request of the deputation and a grant of £250 was made. In communication with the County Council concerning the matter, some misapprehension was caused concerning the amount and the following letter explains the cause: — "I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your letter of 23rd ult. in reference to the above road, which I interpret to mean that you,are uncertain whether an additional grant of £250 hasbeen given for this road, or whether the authority for £240 which was to your council has been increased by £lO. In reply I have to sUte that the amount is not additional. £250 was mentioned by in the Prime Minister's letter: the amount really authorised was £240. You may|be aware that amount? of £250 and over require to be submitted to Cabinet for approval, and in order to save delay this requisition was reduced to £2lO and approved by the Minister himself.—W. S. Short, Assistant Under-Secretary."
