The application of the Waitomo County Council for a loan of £2900 for metalling the Pungarehu and Maire roads, which could not be granted by the Advanced to Settlers Department has been arranged satisfactorily with the Public Trust Office and preliminary arrangements with a view to obtaining the money in time to start work as soon as the weather permits are in hand. It is gratifying to know that the loan has been arranged and that the *nl erprise of the settllera is to be rewarded. The application for a subsidy for the loan is now before Parliament, and it"will not be known until ths Public Work 9 Estimates are produced whether the subsidy is granted. In any case the settlers have determined to proceed with the project, but it the subsidy is not granted a considerable cutting down of the programme of work will be necessary. As was pointed out by the council when the request was made by Mr Quinlan, on behalf of the settlers, to have the loan arranged with the Pbulic Trus Office, the loan Will have to ba accepted whether a subsidy is granted or not.
