COMPLIMENTARY SOCIAL.

APPRECIATION BY SETTLERS

FROM MUD TO METAL

A very enjoyable function was held laat'evening in the Hangatiki Hall, the occasion being to celebrate the completion of the metalling on the I Hangatiki-Waitomo Caves road. At the invitation of the Bettlers of the district a large number of guests attended. The hall was comfortably filled, and the evening most pleasantly passed spent with toasts and musical items. Mr A. S. Board occupied the chair. The following toasts were honoured: —"Army and Navy," proposed by Mr Mowat. "The Contractors," proposed by the chairman, who referred to the guests of the evening in felicitous terms,. Mr A. Scholes, chairman of the Waitomo County j Council, also spoke to the toast,. He said the county was fortunate in gotI ting an enterprising and capable body of contractors. With a competent 1 engineer and staff this fact contributed j greatly to 'he progress of tho district. He expressed the keenest pleasure at being present to celebrate the metalling of such an important road,- which connected the Cave 3 with tho railway. Messrs Tarry, Rothery .Lawson, Stanley, Cartwright and Ryan responded. The toast of "The Waitomo County Council" was proposed by Mr S. Roid who eulogised the work accomplished by the council, engineer and staff. Mr Scholes, in replying, referred to the great amount of work yet to bo done, and said the policy of tho council must be one of progress. Mr Hoffman also responded. The toaßt of "Mr Johnston, " representing the Waitomo riding, was proposed by Mr Comer Board, who paid a tribute to tho councillor for the manner in which he had worked for the progress of tho district, particularly in respect to the loan money. Mr Johnston suitably responded. Other toaats honoured were: —"The Native Race," Messrs Scholes and Johnson Tukitani; "Local Bodies Staff," Mr Rothery— Messrs Gould, Callaghan, Mora, Johnson and Dodge; "The Ladies," Mr Gould —Messrs Comer and Thwaito

(feelingly). During the evening songs were rendered by Messrs C. J. Johnson, G, Berry, Dodge, Whitticombe, Dawson, and Jagßor. Recitation,Mr P. Tarrant. Mr Gould presided at the piano.
