EMPLOYMENT OF BARMAIDS.
INTENTION OF ACT.
Though the licensing trade and the prohibition leaders are full of doubt as to the effectiveness of the law relating to barmaids' registration, the Labour D apartment is going to enforce the provisions of the. Act. The difficulty centred around the employment of barmaids in bars not opening into the street, legal opinion being that such a bar is not defined in the statutes, and therefore the provisions of the Barmaids' Registration Act did not apply. An official statement has been received by the Wellington Hotel Employees' Federation from the Labour Department to the effect that the Crown Law Officers have advised that the Act of last session and its provisions, are quite sufficient to prevent the employment of unregistered barmaids in any part of an hotel. The department further intimated that instructions had been given to the police to take proceedings in any case where 'unregistered barmaids were being employed. The union intends to report specific cases so as to i test the matter in the court*.
