The weather cleared and the wicket ! rolled out fairly well though slightly soft. Sherwell won the toss and sent j Australia in, Ivelleway and Macartney I opening to the bowling of Llewellyn j and Faulkner. The former's first ball | was hit for two by Kelleway. The i second proved fatal as Kelleway was caught by Snooke at fine-slip. Hordern replaced the retiring batsmen. Faulkner bowled from the other end. The wicket bumped somewhat but was rapidly improving. The batsmen were steady, keeping the wicket up. Fifty appeared in 40 minutes, the century occupying 73 minutes. Macartney, as if justifying his inclusion, batted in his most brilliant style, fourers being frequent. Hordern also batted well. Sherwell made frequent changes in the bowling. At 50 Sinclair completely beat Hordern, who was given out legbefore. He had batted eighty-three minutes, hitting four fourers. Eardsley greeted Sinclair with a fourer, next ball a three. After tea the wicket was almost as good as ever, Macartney and Bardsley playing excellent cricket. Bardsley took 57 minutes for his 50 runs. Macartney's century appeared in 152 minutes. This being his third successive century against the South Africans, he was greeted with prolonged cheering. In the return match against New South Wales, the home team won by 44 runs.
