LAND BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING

! The. monthly meeting of the Tara- ! naki Land Board was held on Tuesday, ; 20th February. Present—The Commissioner of Crown Lands (in the j chair), Messrs Heslop, Rattenbury, ! McClggagc and Kennedy.

Land Ballot. —The result of the ballot in the Heao survey district, Opatu block, was laid on the table and confirmed. —A schedule showing result of sale of sections in Whangamomona and Mangaroa towns and block 7, Waitara, was also laid on the table and confirmed.

Transfers.--J. E. Wright to W. 11. ; Norton, sections 24 and 25, block 16, I Egmont, approved; C. Skitrop to C. Skitrop and G. Jensen, section 7, block 11. Upper Waitara, resolved that under the special circumstances the request to admit a partner be agreed to; A. L. Chard to F. W. anci C. Woisin, section 1, block 11, Upper Waitara, Mr Heslop moved that the board sees no reason to alter its previous resolution, which was carried; T. O'Brien to S. Leach, section 8, block 16, Aria, approved subject to residence; H. McLaughlin to Hugh Brown, section 8, block 3, Ohura, approved; J. and R. Morris to C. J. Bleasel. section 2, block 16, Ohura, approved; A. J. Doble to A. J. and R. H. Doble, section 1, block S, Ohura, approved; C.W. Drake to Amy Risk, section 7, block 9, Ohura, approved subject to transferee continuing residence; M. McMahon to C. M. Hawkin, section 10, block 11, Wara, approved; Messrs Govett and Quilliam, solicitors, applied for an extension of time to register transfer T. M. Higgie to E. H. Slater, section 1, block 9, Upper Waitara, tw ; o months granted. The Freehold. -The following applications for the freehold were approved :—C. C. M, and P. R. Farnham, section 6, block 2, Ngatirimu; R. C. Watson, section 36, block 11, Opunake; H. and J. Pittams, section 2, block 7, Fouatu. School Site. —Application having been made to the board when at Ohura for section 1, block 21, town of Mangaroa, for a school residence, it was resolved that the land be recommended to be set apart as an addition to the school site.

"Thirds."—The following proposals were agreed to subject to the ranger's report being favourable:—Whangamomona County Council, £291 6s sd; Waitomo County Council, £252 4s 9d ; Clifton County Council, £l9 16sSd; Ohura County Council, £7BO 153 lOd. Inspection of Holdings.—Mr H. T. Twiss, Crown Lands ranger, reported having inspected five holdings; one selector had not done sufficient improvements. Mr E. Tolme, Crown Lands ranger, reported on the inspection of 16 holdings, three selectors had not done enough improvements, and three were in default for improvements and residence. —Resolved that the usual notice be given to selectors who have not complied with conditions. Rangers' Reports.—H. T. Twiss, reported on inspection of Makahu township reserve, resolved that a lease be put up for public competition for a term of 14 years, in terms of ranger's report; He also reported on inspection of sections at Tikorangi township, and suggested an annual rental of 5s per acre, resolved that a lease for ten years be granted to the applicant in terms of the report, and subject to termination by 12 months' notice. Mr Twiss reported having resumed possession of section 30, block 11, Opunake, and section 5, block 10, Opaku, resolved that the sections be re-offered for selection, weighted with valuation for improvements, the value of felling and grassing on section 5, block 10, Opaku, to be added to the capital value of the land. It was resolved that no present action be taken to deal with 8 acres originally leased with run 4, severed from run 10, by Maben road. E. Tolme, reported on the application of H. and S. Blank for additional land at back of holding, and it was resolved tnat the matter be left in the hands of the Commissioner with power to act therein as may be considered best. E. A. Meredith reported on the application of Mair and Co. for lease of section 2 block 3, Tangitu, the report was approved and the application refused. He also reported re alteration of sections 9 and 19, block 2, Toroto, and it was resolved that further inquiry be made as to allegations by Mr Muhins that the alteration will cut off the water supply from him. Mr Meredith also notified the board that S. Guinan and J. Moloney were not resident on sections allotted to them in Tangitu, he recommended allotting section 2, block 11, Mapara, resolved that the interests of the persons mentined be declared forfeited.

Forfeited. —R. M. Lawrence wrote stating that his wife refused to resideon section 4, block 4, Aria, and it was resolved that the interests of the selector be forfeited and the report obtained as to improvements effected. The Commissioner brought up the question of forfeiting J. M. P. Tapp's interest in section 15, block 1, Tangitu, as he is a permanent employee in Government service, and the section was forfeited. A. J. Whittaker wrote appealing against the forfeiture of section 1, block 2, Piopiotea West. W. Hook appealed against forfeiture of section 2, block 2, Piopiotea West. —lt was resolved that further action be suspended to enable the board to ascertain how the conditions are being complied with. E. S. L. Mowat applied to forfeit his interest in section 1, block 5, Kapara; resolved that the section be forfeited.

Applications for Land. —The application of Messrs W. A. F. and 11. C. Zimmerman for section S, block 15, Upper Waitara, containing 1609 acres, was approved. J. McDonald, lessee of section 5, block 16, Ohura, applied for section 4, block 16, as an addition to his holding, and it was resolved to dispose of the section to applicant after deducting necessary reserve for scenery, township, etc. Mr W. S. Woof applied for land near the 6-mile peg on the Ongarue-Ohura

! main road for an accommodation paddock for travelling stock: It was resolved that the Commissioner be requested to locate a suitable piece of land in the locality when the adjoining land is being surveyed. Applications were received from E. J. Smith. P. Jorgenson, and J. J. Peacock for Crown lands, Taraunui 3 U No, 1: Mr Tolme, Crown Lands ranger, reported on L. S, Fauchelle's application for a portion of same land, and also generally on the block. — Resolved that the application of Mr Fauchelle be approved in terms of the ranger's report, thereby cutting off about 100 acres by a ridge boundary, and that the Commissioner be requested to have the necessary survey made when convenient. It waa further resolved that the applications of the other persons mentioned be refused, and the balance of the block be opened for selection in the ordinary manner. A. E. Bloomfield, section 16, block -1, Totoro, applied for section 17, block 4, Totoro, as an addition to his holding, but consideration was defjrred. A. Hagenson. the selector of section 1, block 3, Waro, applied for a small area of section 8, block 7, Waro, to be added to his holding; resolved to obtain the report of the ranger as to the value. Mrs A. Dean applied to lease sections 23 and 24, block 4, town of Whangamomona: resolved that a year-to-year tenancy be granted, to terminate by one month's notice on either side. S. Blake applied to lease part section 637, Patea district: Resolved that the necesasry steps be taken to grant same.—A. Julian applied to purchase Rangitoto-Tuhua 77 E, section IA, 160 acres: Resolved that the board is at present unable to deal with the matter.

Not Suitable, for Subdivision.- —It was resolved that, owing to the formation of the country the board is of opinion that run 10, Opaku, 2718 acres, is not suitable for subdivision, and recommends that the usual action be taken for a renewal of the present lease as provided by law at a rental on the unimproved value, in trems of the ranger's report. Non-Compliance with Conditions.' — D. and D. S. Maxwell, section 1, block 5, Taurakawa, and section, 2 block 4, Mahoe (residence) : Resolved that a reply to last communication be asked for.—A. M. and H. Gill, section 2, block 2, Heao (residence and improvements) : Resolved that a further extension of six months be granted to effect the required improvements. —J. E. Hastie, section 20, block 13, Mahoe, and sections 21 and 22, block 16, Ngatirimu (improvements) : Resolved that consideration be deferred for a month and a reply to last communication be asked for. —J. McGrath, sections 1 and 2, block 8, Aria (improvements) : Ranger's report to be obtained.—G. E. Anderson, section 3, block 5, and section 10, block 6, Pouatu (improvements) : Six months' further extension of time in which to bring improvements up to date.--G. W. Stratton, section 2, block 5, Waro (improvements) : Three months' extension.

General.—Messrs Malone, Anderson and Johnstone were granted two months' extension of time in which to register sub-lease W. 8., D. M., and G. C. Smith to W. Godkin, section 16, block 4, Omona.—Messrs Spence and Stanford, solicitors, asked if the board would accept a sub-lease of section 1, block 1. Rangi, Mr McMaster: Mr Heslop moved to the effect that the board adheres to a previous resolution. Mr Attenbnry seconded. Mr Kennedy moved an amendment that upon Mr McMaster submitting a sub-lessee who is satisfactory to the board, a sub-lease will be agreed to. Mr McCluggage seconded. The motion was carried.—J. Telfar applied for a renewal of his lease of section 65, Urenui township: A new lease was granted for a term of five years.— J. Hutchens applied for a renewal of his lease of section 1, block 13, Mimi: It was resolved that the board will be prepared to grant a year-to-year tenancy. —J. H. Roche applied for a further extension of time to do improvements on section 3, block 2, Heao: Six months' extension granted. —J. M. Buckly asked that if he sold sub-ections 2, section 25, block 10, Ngaire, the board would consider him eligible for the next ballot: Decided to take no action in the matter.—D. W. Smith and others wrote complaining of access to sections on Marco road, Pouatu survey district: Resolved that the board is cully impressed with the position cf settlers, and recommends the matter for the earnest consideration of the Government.— T. S. Senior, lessee of section 2, block 8, Waro, applied for exemption from rent for a year or two or reduction in rent: Resolved that inquiry be made into the matter.—H. Woodill, section 7, block 7, Heao, applied to admit J. C. Flanagan as a partner: Resolved that the board has no power to grant the request. —The UnderSecretary for Lands wrote suggesting that the Tatu settlers acquire a section at auction for sale yards and sheep dip: Resolved that the matter be further considered, when the necessary survey can be made.—A. Wind, section 15, block 12, Aria, applied for his lease to issue: Agreed to.—J. A. Menzie, section 5, block 79, Mapara, applied for permission to take timber from road fronting section 25: The matter was left in the hands of the Commissioner, who will report to next meeting.
