The modern shark is deteriorating. In ages gone by there were ferocious sharks, such as would make a mouthful of you without blinking, 70ft. in length. Plenty of their teeth have been found which axe sin. long, whereas the biggest of the teeth belonging to sharks that exist at the present day are l£in. long. When it was first proposed to light the streets of London with gas, great objection was made by the public and newspapers on the ground that the people would be poisoned, that the trees and vegetation would all be killed, and that domestic animals could not possibly survive the deadly fumes.: - 1686,'
