OHURA CO-OPERATIVE DAIRY COMPANY.
The monthly meeting of the Ohura Co-operative Dairy Company, was held at Niho Niho on 12th inst., all directors being present. The chairman explained that owing to the cost of pumping water, a line of pipes had been laid to a spring on Mr Julian's farm. The laying of the pipes had been undertaken earlier than had been intended owing to the pumps having been found broken. The manager expected the water to be connected in about a week's time: Owing to incurring this expense it was necessary to arrange an overdraft with the Union Bank of Australia; last season they found that it was unsatisfactory in delaying payment of butter-fat after the 20th in each month, so thin season, by arranging an overdraft, they would be in a position to pay to date at a very little cost in interest. By delaying payment last season they had only drawn on their overdraft once and that was only for a few day's. Still the advantage was sufficient to justify them in paying the extra interest. By having water laid on by gravitation they would save fully £SO per season in firewood, thus saving the cost of the work in two seasons,
The question of selling the separator and milk pump was left over for next meeting.
The secretary of the National Dairy Association wrote, offering to supply butter-boxes delivered at Ongarue. Mr Denison explained that comparing the price paid last season for boxes, the present offer would mean a saving of £ls on last season's output.—Resolved that in future boxes be procured through the National Dairy Association.
Messrs Griffiths wrote explaining the delay that arose over the payment of the s.s. Kaipara shipment of butter, the final arrangement was 127s 6d per cwt., which was very satisfactory. Messrs Mills and Sparrow wished in future to know as to which system the company wished their butter insured under —whether on the basis of the fair market price of butter on the day previous to loss or shipwreck or on the fair market value on the estimated date of arrival in London. —It was decided to accept insurance on the fair market value on estimated date of arrival.
After the secretary had explained the financial position it was decided to pay 8d for butter-fat for October month, 7|d cash and £d to pay for factory: non-guarantors to receive 7£d cash.
Manager's Report.—As directed by you we started operations on September 22nd, and up to the present the output shows a substantial increase as against the corresponding period of last season. The grading has been fairly satisfactory, although owing to our running alternate days and to my lack of experience with certain particular flavours in this district, I have not yet been able to maintain the high standard we would wish. I have found it necessary. to make several alterations to the plant, which, with several, additions, have run the working expenses higher than would otherwise have been the case. There are still some minor improvements to be made and we shall then be in a fair way to produce a good article at a low cost. As directed by you I had a hot water tank erected and a washing shed. The work of laying on the water from the spring has been gone with. On the advice of your chairman I am working a nearer, and to all appearances a reliable spring, than the one decided on by you. A drive of 25 feet has been put in on the course of the spring, and I expect to finish in a few days. I have decided to run every day from the 16th inst., and will start the Otangiwai creamery on that date. As there are no means at hand of testing our scales, I would suggest that you procure a Government test weight (561bs) for this purpose. The accommodation at the creamery is very poor for a married man, and as it is to our interest to make the men comfortable, I would ask you to consider the advisability of adding one, or even two, rooms to the present residence, and to supply a small cooking range.
