PUBLIC WORKS STATEMENT.

TOTAL VOTES £2,855,000. ONGARUE-STRATFORD LINE £IOO,OOO. BACK-BLOCK ROADS £229,520. The Public Works Statement was laid on the tables in the House of Representatives on Tuesday night, as briefly noted in our last issue. The Minister for Public Works, in his speech, said the expenditure during the past year had amounted to £2,218,975, which, except for the previous year, was the largest on such works for many years. RAILWAY VOTES. Detailing the railway construction work of the year the Minister said 61 miles 6 chains had been opened, die expenditure being £1,283,932. Dealing with the proposed votes he said £IOO,OOO had been put down for the North Auckland railway and £20,000 for a bridge over the Waikato at Huntly and for a branch railway to open up the extensive coal deposits in the Awaroa district there. The votes for the other sections were as under:—

Tauranga - Paengaroa £25,000, Gis-borne-Motu £BO,OOO, Napier-Gisborne £SOOO, total £IIO,OOO. Dealing with the Stratford Main Trunk, the Minister asid: —"It is expected that the section to Pohokura will be ready to be handed over for regular traffic in January next. The section between Pohokura and Whangamomona is in hand, and is progressing very satisfactorily. Last year's expenditure constituted a record, having amounted to £93,235. For the current year a vote of £IOO,OOO is proposed." BUILDING VOTES.

The total expenditure on public buildings last year amounted to £335,114. For the current year votes totalling £413,190 are proposed. Provision is made for the completion of the new Government House, and a substantial item on account of the erection of the proposed new part buildings, also for dapartmental buildings in Hamilton, Gisborne, and other places, the total vote proposed under the general heading being £50,000. Provision is also made for the purchase of land and preparing site and erection of buildings for the new mental hospital at Tokanui, £12,500. POSTAL AND TELEGRAPH.

The sum of £300,000 has been provided for the development of the Lake Coleridge and the Hutt river schemes. KING COUNTRY ROADS.
