WAIKATO HOSPITAL BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the above board was held on Thursday last. Mr J. Boddie was granted leave of absence. Dr Douglas wrote regretting his inability to attend owing to an attack of pleurisy. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr R. L. Somers, who until recently represented the Te Aroha Borough Council on the board. Mr Somers returned a cheque for £8 14s, amount due to him for travelling expenses, and asked the board to accept it as a donation together with £1 Is in lieu of selling tickets for the ball, which he was unable to do through being absent. The board decided to recommend Miss E. M. Smith, of Te Kuiti, for free tuition and training in the St. Helen's Maternity Home. In order to arrive at a settlement of outstanding accounts and settle matters in dispute with the Auckland Board, Mr Conradi was authorised to proceed to Auckland at an early date. An application from Mr M. Schofield to be allowed to live away from the hospital grounds was referred to the house committee for their report. The house committee were empowered to take steps to secure an adequate water supply for the summer. The treasurer reported receipts amounting to £667 9s 7d; loan account, dr. £9000; general account, cr., £I4OB. It was stated that a cheque was required for transfer of half a year's interest from general to loan account. —The report was received and the cheque agreed to. The surgeon-superintendent's report for the period ending September 22nd, showed that there were 76 inmates (41 males and 25 females), and that four deaths had taken place. Nurse Beattie, who has completed her term, resigned, and Miss Lewis was appointed probationer in her place.- -Report received. Three were fifty applications for the position of caretaker at the old men's home, and they were referred to a committee comprising the chairman, and Messrs Young, Bailey, Dickinson and Teasdale, to reduce to six. Application is to be made to the borough council to tar and sand the footpath in front; of the board's office. The secretary was instructed to write to Dr Valentine in connection with the proposed hospital at Rotorua. It was decided that should patients require other medical assistance than the hospital staff they must make their own arrangements.
