MAIROA.

-—♦---■ (Own Correspondent.) A meeting was held at Mairoa school boose on Saturday, July 31st, with the ohjeet of discussing proposals for metalling the roads in the Mairoa Riding. Mr Were, councillor for the riding was in toe chair.

A scheme was put forward by Mr Francis to metal the Arapae and portion of the Mairoa roads. He proposed to raise a loan of £7OOO and a subsidy of £3OOO, and those ratepayers who would have a metalled road adjacent to their properties to pay full rates, while those farther back to pay half. The proposal did not find favour with the majority, as it was pointed out that when these other roads wanted metalling these ratepayers would be paying for new loan as well as for the Arapae, which wood bring them up to a rate and a half.

The Chairman pointed out that he would be in favour of a scheme which would metal the whole of the main roads only, and to have it spread over a number of years, so that the burden would not be felt ft>r some time to come. A resolution was finally carried to have the County Engineer and another competent disinterested person to make a valuation of the cost of metalling the main roads of the riding.
