TE AWAMUTU

Resident Correspondent. —The Hunt.— The hounds meet again at Pirongia on Wednesday. It is hardly possible for this meet to become more popular. Tbe country can be called ideal bunt- . ing country, and its popularity can be judged by the number of miles enthusiasts come to join in the sport. —An Unwelcome Visitor.— Mr W. J. Phillips bad an unwelcome visitor to his jeweller's shop a day or two ago. A steer being driven from the sale yards quietly walked into the shop. After a close inspection of a sewing machine the steer took its departure after smashing a chair in which it had endeavoured to sit, and giving the proprietor a bit of a scare. —Sporting.— For Wednesday, August 11th. the Pirongia committee of the VVaikato Hounds are inaugurating a point to point steeplechase. In addition there will be two or three minor eversts. Permission has been obtained to use the racecourse. A good afternoon's sport can be looked forward to, as there are some pretty fair cattle own- j ed among th* members of the Waskaio Hunt Club. —Farewelled. — After the conclusion of "Ha-ay Con- ; elusions," on Thursday night Mr T. J. i Morrison, of the P.O. Staff, was entertained at a supper by the members of the company on the occasion of his re- i turning to Taumarunui. About -10 sat down to the supper, provided by the ladies who bad taken part in the play. Several valedictory speeches were made expressing regret that Mr Morrison's sojourn here had come to such a "Hasty Conclusion." Mr Morrison returns to Taumarunui today. —Personal. — Mr H. Jones, of the local P.O. Staff, who has been at Taumarunui for a month or two has resumed duties here. After being identified with this district for a number of years, Mr J. P. Vause, postmaster, is to leave to take up a similar position in Auckland. Mr Vause has been intimately connected with most progressive movements for the settlement of the town. The public library is an institution in which he took an unbounded interest, and owes much of its popularity to his efforts. —Land Settlement. - Both sections in Teasdale Settlement submitted for lease on Wednesday were disposed of. T. E. Mandeno and G. M. Irving were the successful applicants.
