THE KING COUNTRY CHRONICLE. THURSDAY, NOV. 12, 1908. DISTRICT PARS.

A meeting of the Te Kuiti 'Athletic Sports takes place in the Chronicle Office at 8 p.m. on Satudray evening. All interested are requested to attend.

A meeting of the congregation of St. Luke's Chucrh, Te Kuiti, is to be held this evening at 8 p.m.. when a full attendance is requested. In connection with the church services it should be noted that the time of the Sunday evening service is now altered from seven o'clock to half an hour later.

Our Tongaporutu correspondent, wires as follows:—-Mr Jennings, Government candidate, for Taumarunui seat, has just completed a tour of the electorate which has taken one month. The candidate has been receied favourably all round. The roads throuhgout the electorate are now getting in good order and owing to the dry weather there is great abundance of grass in most places, and 3tock of all classes are numerous and looking well. Owing to the favourable winter weather, the whole of Kobe Potae country, which comprises the Taumarunui electorate shows a remarkable increase in the population and the opening up of country, from productive points, since last election.

The next meeting of the Waitomo County Council will be the statutory annual meeting, and will be held at the County office Otorohanga, on the fourth Wednesday in November, the 25th.

The opening of the Main Trunk line on Friday last was attended by Messrs Ormsby, Phillips, Lorigan, Johnson, Darrow and Fortescue of the Te Kuiti Railway League, and Mr T. S. Hickman of* the Mokau-Waitewhena Railway League. The parly interviewed the Premier at, Makatote with reference to the Stratford-Main Trunk line, and were informed that nothing had yet been decided regarding the route to be taken. Steps are to be taken to place the views of the respective Leagues before, the Government.

Mr Bowater. the Opposition candidate, has had good meetings during the week at Kawhia. Kinohaku and Otorohanga, at which later place he received a vote of confidence. The candidate dealt strongly with the Native land question and also the linking up of Kawhia and back country with the main trunk line.

Messrs Jenniiigs and Bowater held meetings at Kaeaea last, week, and both gentlemen were greeted with fair audiences. Mr Elwood presided on each occasion. Mr Jennings received a vote of thanks and appreciation of the manner in which he had represented the district, while Mr Bowater received a vote of thanks for his able address.

It is with regret we have to chronicle the departure of Mr Akerman from Te Kuiti. who left for Hamilton on Tuesday last, where, we understand, lie ioins a well known firm of land and commission agents. Prior to his departure Mr Akerman was entertained and presented with a handsome case m pipes as a inomento Irom his le Kuiti friends. Mr J. T. Hetet. who mane the presentation, referred in high Urms to Mr Arkerman's sterling qnahues and regretted exceedingly that lie had decided to leave the district. ;Wr Akerman, in a few chosen iemaiks, ie sponded. During the evening songs were rendered by members of the company and several speeches were inane.

Some forty-four resident.!' ol le Kuiti will find themselves unable io exercise their vote 011 election da\ owing to the fact that their claims were witnessed by a person who was not qualified to do so. It. seems almost incredible that although claim forms have been available at this office and the post office, a stranger is nine, in the course of three days, place such a number on the roli. l-rom what %\e can gather the person referred to is an elector of the Palmerston district, am, holds a voter's permit for that electorate, thus defranchising himself so far as Taumarunui is concerned. Y\ e believe that proceedings are to he taken against the witnesser ot the claims mentioned for misleading the Registrar bv applving for a permit after having made application to be placed on the local roil. t is hard for those w.lO signed the applications to he now disfranchised but perhaps it will be a esson to residents to make their t.ec.aiations before some responsible elector whom they know and not entrust sucn an important matter to a stiangi i.
