WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

KAIKOURA BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Kaikoura Branch of the Women’s Institute took place at St. Paul’s Hall on Tuesday afternoon, Mrs A. J. Harris (president) presiding over a moderate attendance. Apologies were received for the absence of Mesdauies D. H. Stove, J. J. Gibson, M. Gibsoh, K. K. Campbell and J. P. Smith. The meeting opened with the singing of the National Anthem, followed by Scripture reading and prayer by the Rev. G. H. Moodey. Four new members were welcomed. The President asked members to observe one minute’s silence out of respect to relatives and friends of distressed and missing overseas soldiers. A letter was received from Mr and Mrs Stove, thanking the Institute members for letter and messages of sympathy in the illness of their son. It was pleasing to learn that Master TonyStove is progressing satisfactorily after his distressing operation. The roll call, 1 ‘ Would I rather be my Grandmother or Myself, and the Reason Why,” was well received. A letter was received from the Federation Council, intimating that members would visit Kaikoura on July 3, and it was decide! t<» hold the monthly meeting on that date instead of July J. During the afternoon Mrs Abraham Boyd contributed a vocal solo, for which she was thanked. The “Yes-No jacik-pot” competition arranged by Mrs F. S. Rutherford created much ‘pleasure and amusement. Miss S. Thompson, infant mistress of the Town School, gave an interesting and graphic description of her trip abroad, for which she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Miss Thompson consented to continue her travel talk at a future meeting. The winners of the competitions were:—Sewing, apron made from one yard of cretonne: Mrs Abraham Boyd. Cooking, four scones: Mrs Abraham Boyd. Flowers, bowl of autumn berries: Mrs J. Rainey.

The hostesses, Mesdames W. A. Hopkins T. H. Hitchcock, D. M. Jack, H. C. Osmond and W. F. Perrin, provided an enjoyable afternoon tea, which was much appreciated. Mrs N. B. Comer was the accompanists for the musical portion of the programme.
