THE MAYFAIR THEATRE
•THE GHOST BREAKERS.” TO-NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY. If advance reports can be credited, Paramount’s new mystery - comedy thriller, “The Ghost Breakers,” which again co-stars that incomparable team of Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard, and which opens on Tuesday and will be repeated on Wednesday at the Mayfair Theatre, transcends even its vastly popular predecessor, “The Cat and the Canary,” in high entertainment values The story tells of Paulette inheriting a castle on an island off Cuba, and the •machinations of as desperate a set of villains as could be imagined, who try to prevent her from visiting her estate, and scare her into selling it. Bob Hope, as a radio commentator who is always exposing underworld characters, and their rackets, is catapulted into the picture, and goes to Cuba with Paulette. Starting with a murder and several other exciting and strange happenings, on Paulette’s floor in her hotel, the thrills continue aboard ship, where more threats and warnings are received, and someone tries to k'ill Paulette, but Bob Hope saves her. In the horrible haunted castle—guarded by a weird old woman and her Zombie son—sliding panels, floating wraiths, mysterious moans and noises, provide a spine-ting-ling atmosphere building up to a sensational climax that will come as a complete surprise to all who see the picture. Produced by Arthur Hornblow, and died by George Marshall. “The Ghost Breakers” features Richard Carlson, Paul Lukas, Anthony Quinn and Willie Best.
