VALEDICTORY.

A very pleasant evening was spent at the home of Mrs R. Strahl on Friday, when members of the Kaikoura Croquet Club met to bid farewell to Mrs Janies Murray. The room was tastefully decorated with bowls of anemones, polyanthus and tawny coloured chrysanthemums. Cards were played in the early hours of the evening, the winner being Mrs J. Monk. Mr Claverley Smith presented Mrs Murray with a posy of dainty pink rosebuds, maiden-hair fern and white holly. Mrs Strahl (president of the Croquet Club) expressed regret at naving to lose such a valued and keen member. She said that Mrs Murray had always taken a keen interest in the Club’s affairs and had ably filled the office of President, and members felt that they could not let her depart from amongst them without sonic little recognition of her valuable services. Mrs Strahl then presented Mrs Murray with a silver serviette ring, suitably engraved with croquet mallets, and wished her, on behalf of all present, happiness and health in her new surroundings:. Mrs Murray responded thanking the President for her kindly remarks, and all present for their very beautiful gift, which would remind her of the many happy hours spent amongst them. She regretted very much having 10 leave her friends, and wished the club all future success. “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” was sung and three hearty cheers were given. An amusing competition was W’on .by Mrs C. Schroder. Elocutionary items were given by Miss Rose Gibson, a vocal solo by Mr Clav. Smith, violin solos by Master Alf Strahl, ’cello solos by Muster Ivan Strahl, instrumental trios by Miss A. Strahl (piano), A. Strahl (violin), I. Strahl (’cello). A very dainty supper was partaken of and the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” concluded a very pleasant evening.
