SOUTH ISLAND MAIN TRUNK.
Information is to hand that the survey of the route of the South Island Main Trunk Line will be put in hand shortly, ami that the survey will be carried out from both railheads. INDIGNANT COUNTY COUNCILLORS. New Zealand's Prime Minister (Hon. J. G. Coates) is becoming famous, espe eially in Marlborough, for his peremptory replies to deputations (says th;* Marlborough Express). It would appear that “hustle” methods arc not altogether popular, and it was a lack of appreciation of these4ibni]»t tactics which led to an imputation' of discourtesy being made out against the Primo Minister at the meeting of the Marlborough County Council last-jattl'k. The Chairman (Mr D. described to the Council the t rent incut ••‘accorded a recent deputation on the siß>-jr r ct of Public Works grants.
Councillor 11. J. Stace referred 'to lhe attitude adopted by the Prime Min istor towards the railway deputation, also, when considerable indignation had been aroused by his autocratic bearing. “It seems,” declared the Councillor, “that wi* don’t even get common courtesy from him, and surely we are entitled to that. It seems to me that some of his officers are taking the cue from hinj, also, ami they treatWs in the same inconsiderate fashion. fiowever, such tilings end; they don’t gd€pn for ever.” i Councillors R. F. GoiMer and C. J. Bryant spoke in similar®rain. » Councillor C. Nees: have tinremedy in our hands — you will vote for the same Govern ment. The speaker in tin 1 meeting that the thing would be a separate for this Island. The Houtlk might receive consideration, then. ANOTHER VIEW. A’r Mills reported upon the railway deputation to the Prime Minister, which he accompanied, as the delegate to the branch . Although a supporter of the present Government, he said, he felt he must say that the Government did not make an equal allocation of public moneys between the North ami South Islands. The North Island sei'nid to he always getting the lion’s share, ami the trunk line, which was the backbone of :his Island, was an example in point. Mr W. L. Hammond asserted that hi.--belief was if it had been a North Island deputation it would have secured the line in a few minutes. Mr Dodson: We’ll have to make it a political issue.Mr Mills was accorded a vote of thanks for his report.
