Evans, tobacconist, who waa recently arrested for smuggling tobacco, pipes, and soap, was fined 5100, whioh was subsequently reduced to £50, and oosfcs £2 9a. Auckland, June 9. A strong detachment of police and two aciing detectives attended tbe Auckland Coursing Club meeting today in charge of a sergeant but although tho " talent " in great force not a single instance of cash betting took p'aee. The bookmakers were apprehensive from the strength of the force that more vigorous measures would be taken than merely to take down the names of the cash betters. Auckland June 9. The police and Inspecting officers of J ths Charitable Aid Board made a diligent investigation at Onehunga, s.ut failed to discover the woman who i exposed and abandoned her chi d on the doorstep of Mr Peter M'Kenzie, a I member of the Onehunga Borough Council. _____________
