WORK IN COUNTY
FOREMAN’S REPORT MAY MEETING HELD COUNCIL AT COROMANDEL In making his report to the Maj/ meeting of the Coromandel County Council, Mr J. T. Hinchco, county foreman, stated: No. 309 Main Highway: “Further general maintenance work has been attended to on this highway and the No. 5 and 13 bridges on this road are in a very weak state. Generally most bridges are showing evidence of their age and no doubt a major undertaking in the near future will have to be considered.
Kuaotunu: “Most of the pot holes on No. 5 and No. 6 sections of the Kuao-tunu-Whitianga road have received attention. Two six feet by 10 feet concrete pipes have been borrowed for the Otama road. The decking planks for the small bridge at the causeway are at hand. These will be forwarded together with the pipes at the first opportunity. The part time worker engaged on this road is doing good maintenance work.
Whitianga: “The main roads in the district are in fair order. Most of the subsidiary roads in the township are lacking metal. It is hoped to direct attention to the bad sections of Mill creek road when materials become available and to have repairs effected to the bridge on the Kaimarama road. This structure at present was almost unusable. Whenuakite-Hahei: “The Te Kauanga wharf shed is complete with the exception of the doors and door fittings. Material is being obtained for the doors and white hangers and rails . are on hand. I would recommend that four gallons, of suitable paint be purchased to protect the building. The surfaceman engaged in this district has now directed his attention to general maintenance work on the roads in this area.
Whangapoua: “The contractor has carried out good work on z the wharf road to Tererenga, filling most of the big holes on the causeway with metal, plus spreading metal on the recently reformed portion between No. 1 and 3 bridges. Attention has been given to the draining and cutting back of growth on this road. “During the boisterous weather several small slips occurred on the hill section of No. 9 and No. 10 main roads, blocking the water tables. These obstructions have now been removed.
Kennedy Bay: “The grader has been operating on the Western side of the Tokatea hill. Workmen have cut back the growth, cleared the watertables and culverts. Parts of this rdad are at present in a bad state through lack of surfacing materials. Port Jackson-Big Bay; “The contractors have completed metalling the Port Jackson flat, while the hill section has benefited by having most of the bare stretches coated. As the cartage contractors work back towards Colville it is proposed to have some relief effected at the Waiaro flat area. During the storm two trees fell across the road at Fan Tail bay and these were removed and the road opened for traffic.
Port Oharles-Big Bay: “Some grading has been carried out on this road though unfortunately wet weather intervened and further grading work had to be curtained. Timber has been forwarded to Waikawau for the cattle stop. This should how allow the work of construction to be undertaken. The approach to No. 2 bridge on the Waikawau road has received attention. 'Colville: “The workman engaged here has been attending to general maintenance work, two sets of culverts required lifting, cleaning and replacing at a lower level. This work has been completed. No. i bridge on the Wharf road has had new earth planks fitted to prevent the filling from subsiding. The grader has operated in the district during the period. While some good results were achieved, part of the work had to be carried over owing to the wet conditions prevailing. Colville-Coromandel: “This road has received some attention by the grader. Several sections of the rood’s surface on the hill are showing signs of weakness through insufficient metal surfacing. The extremely bad corner at the junction of the Papa Aroha camping ground and the main roads has been widened and metalled. General maintenance work has been carried out by the workman employed on sections 12, 13, 14 of this road. Coromandel: “Grading -work has been carried out on area No. 11. The drain between the bridge at Morris . and Oxford terrace has been cleared and reshaped. Attention has also been given to the. erosion on the Long Bay road. Broken decking has been replaced on the Driving Creek Bridge with the addition of running planks.
