WHITIANGA HALL

REPLY FROM MINISTER / QUESTION OF A PERMIT The Mercury Bay hall trustees > have received a reply to a personal letter written to the Minister of Works, Hon. R. Semple, regarding a building permit for the new hall at Whitianga. The reply, which was signed by Hon. Mr F. Jones on behalf of the Minister of Works, states that, at his request, the Building Control Advisory Committee had reviewed the application for a permit for concrete walls for the new hall, but, “ although it is realised that a social hall is a necessary and desirable amenity in any community, in view of the serious position regarding building supplies the immediate approval of a permit for this work would not be justified. The committee is not prepared to approve a permit other than subject to the conditions previously imposed—i.e. no concrete walls, no new roofing iron, no concrete front.”

This reply would appear to be quite final and it will allow the trustees to make plans for some alternative method of raising the airforce building the necessary six feet in height. In the meantime public social activity at Whitianga is at a standstill.
