LOCAL HOCKEY TEAM TOURNEY AT AUCKLAND COUNTRY WEEK MATCHES The Hauraki Plains-Thames Hockey Association’s representative team which is competing in the annual Country Week hockey tournament at Auckland this week, has secured wins in both matches played to date.

Play commenced at Walker Park on Monday and in the White Horse Cup the team in the B section defeated Franklin B by three goals to two. Wiring the Gazette on Tuesday morning the manager of the team, Mr Stan Wilson, of Kaihere, said the game was an even one and both teams fought well to gain the upper hand. G. Reid (Kerepeehi) was briliant in attack and outstanding in defence while J. Bowen (Kopuarahi) was a very sound and reliable back. S. Bowen (Kopuarahi) scored all goals for the Hauraki-Thames team. The manager reported that the whole team was playing a good standard of

hockey. Playing on Tuesday, Hauraki two defeated Central King Country one. Wiring the Gazette this morning, Mr Wilson stated that G. Reid was again outstanding, scoring both goals, one from a good passing rush and the second from a good follow in from a penalty corner. D. Bowen showed great speed on the water-logged field. J. Middleton and 0. Hudson did good work. W. Kidd played a great game in goal. The whole team combined well.

WOMEN’S MATCHES

FAST AND EVEN GAME

Matches in . the Auckland Women’s Hockey. Association’s Country Week tournament commenced at Melville Park on Monday. On the first day Hauraki A, playing in the C section of the competition, drew with Waikato B, there being no score. Hauraki B had a bye. Commenting on the game in a special message to the Gazette, Mr S, Wilson of Kaihere reported that the match was very fast and even. L. Wallis proved very dependable and M. Autridge was also very reliable. A. Gilpin made many brilliant saves in goal. Both teams suffered defeat on Tuesday, Hauraki B 1 playing in the A section losing to Rodney by. nine goals to nil, while Hauraki A v in the C section, lost to Waikato A by four goals to two. In a special message to the Gazette this morning, Mr S. Wilson stated that Waikato had the best of play, but the local girls fought hard and only lost in the last few minutes. M. Constantine played well at centre, scoring one goal, with K. Nash scoring the second goal. E. Holmes played well but tended to go back to hei’ best position at centre forward.
