HUNT WEEK

OPENING DAY AT WAIHI FIRST MEET ON SATURDAY 70 FOLLOWERS ATTEND Heavy wind and driving rain marked the opening day of the Paeroa hunt week at Waihi on Saturday last, but despite the adverse conditions approximately 70 followers attended the hunt. The hounds were thrown off on Mr O. Bjerring’s farm and the hunt took place over 2000 acres of his property which extends to the sea coast.

Within five minutes the hounds put up a hare but after a short run it went to earth. There were no further runs although a number of hares were put up, as the high wind caused the hounds to quickly lose the scent. Breakfast and afternoon tea was provided by Mr and Mrs J. Brady at their homestead, and was greatly appreciated on such a cold day. At the conclusion' of the day the master, Mr W. Marshall, thanked the host and hostess for their hospitality, and Mr Bjerring for allowing them to hunt, over his farm again. The officials and followers, said Mr Marshall, realised that they owed a lot to the farmers who threw open their places for hunting; without them 1 there could be no hunts. Mr Marshall also said that it was most gratifying to see so many young riders among the followers, it was grand to see the young ones taking an interest and spoke well for the future Of hunting. Mr Brady replied briefly, saying that it was a pleasure to both Mrs Brady and himself to entertain them all at his home. Well-known enthusiasts seen among the onlookers were Mr E. P. Fathers and Mr V. Young of Paeroa, Mr W. Thompson of Kerepeehi, Mr Adams and Mr Henderson of Maramarua, and Mr B. A. Kelly of Hikutaia. Among the followers were: Mr W.
